Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, also known as Lapsang Souchong, is one of the earliest red teas in China and originates from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province. Its name means “small variety from the true mountains,” emphasizing its authentic origin in Tongmu Village, where the tradition has been preserved for generations.
According to legend, the tea was created by chance when the leaves were quickly dried over a pinewood fire, giving the tea its distinctive smoky aroma.
Later, the tea became the first Chinese red tea exported to Europe, where it quickly became known for its smoky aroma, woody notes, and hints of baked fruit.
Today, Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong remains an emblem of traditional tea craftsmanship and one of the most recognizable teas in the world.
